Willingboro Fire Department Training - Hydraulic Tools vs. Eggs
By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
March 3, 2015
Willingboro firefighters conducted an unusual training session on the afternoon of March 3rd. The firefighters tested their "light touch" skills and their hydraulic rescue tools, commonly known as the Jaws of Life. The test was to see if the firefighters could pick up an egg with the hydraulic tools without breaking the egg. If the firefighters were able to pick up the egg, they then had to place it on top of a cone or in the cap of a paint can.
All of the platoon members conducted the testing in full protective equipment and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The training gave the firefighters the opportunity to see how gently they could operate the tools. In addition to testing the skills of the user, it gave the firefighters the opportunity to learn how fast or slow different tools operated in delicate situations. This type of skill could be valuable in real world rescue situations where a "light touch" is needed when using the tools.
