By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
April 17, 2015

On the afternoon on April 4th, firefighters from Willingboro and surrounding towns were called to 34 Twig Lane for a reported house on fire with a person still inside. At 11:48 am Supervisor 1610 (Captain Ramsey) and Engine 1613 received the call for the house fire. They arrived on scene at 11:53 am and found a two story home with nothing showing. Lieutenant Clark and Firefighter E. O'Donnell proceeded to the front door and upon opening the door they found heavy smoke from the ceiling to the floor.

Captain Ramsey was advised by the homeowner that someone was upstairs in one of the bedrooms. Lieutenant Clark and Firefighter O'Donnell immediately made their way upstairs to start a search. While searching the second floor they came across a door that was locked. With the assistance of Firefighter Fresco, the crew used hand tools to force open the door. Once entering the room Lieutenant Clark used a Thermal Imaging Camera to help locate a person who was in the room, as Firefighters Fresco and O'Donnell broke the room's windows to remove smoke for better visibility.

Lieutenant Clark and Firefighter O'Donnell started to remove the unconscious person from the home. As they were coming down the steps they were met by a crew from Mount Laurel Ladder 3615. The person was taken outside to a waiting EMS crew, and was transported to a local hospital. The crew of Engine 1613 then finished the search of the home, along with the crew from Mount Laurel, and found no other persons inside of the home.

While searching the home for additional persons, the firefighters found several small fires that had been set throughout the home. All of the fires were quickly extinguished. Once the fires were extinguished all personnel were removed from the home until investigators from the Burlington and NJ State Fire Marshals Offices, Willingboro Police Department Detective Bureau, and the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office arrived on the scene. All four of these agencies assisted with conducting an investigation of the fire.

It was later found that the person who was removed from the home had committed suicide after setting the fires. Two other adults who lived in the home, but were not home at the time of the fire, received assistance from the American Red Cross. Willingboro Firefighters remained on location to assist investigators. All units were clear from the scene at 6:55 pm.
