By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
April 15, 2016

Willingboro Firefighters teamed up with volunteers from the American Red Cross and other organizations to help install smoke detectors as a part of the "Home Fire Campaign". The program is sponsored by the American Red Cross in an effort to reduce the number of home fire-related injuries and fatalities in New Jersey. Through this program the American Red Cross and fire departments from throughout New Jersey have installed over 10,000 smoke detectors as of October 2014.

On the morning of April 2nd, personnel from the Willingboro Fire and Emergency Services Departments, Willingboro CERT Team, FEMA Corp., Radwell, Marlin Leasing, US Air Force, Bowman & Bowman, and individual volunteers met at the Bookbinder School on Brooklawn Drive. The group was addressed by the American Red Cross, Chief of Department Burnett, Public Safety Director Rucker, and Mayor Nathanial Anderson during a light breakfast. The personnel were then divided into groups and given their assigned streets in Buckingham.

The crews went door to door handing out fire safety literature, and smoke detectors if requested by the residents. At the end of the day 418 smoke detectors had been installed in most of Buckingham Park. Crews will be returning at a later date to complete the remainder of the streets in Buckingham Park. Other parks in Willingboro will be scheduled for a later date.
