As the warm weather of summer approaches, our roadways see an increase in motorcycle traffic. Motorcycles are more popular than ever before due to the price of gas and the freedom of the open road. The increased use of motorcycles requires all of us to use more caution while operating any motor vehicle.

There are over 4 million registered motorcycles in the United States. In 2009, 4,762 people were killed as a result of motorcycle accidents in the United States. Over 80% of all reported motorcycle accidents result in death or injury as compared to only 20% for cars.

Some tips to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from motorcycle accidents include:

1. Rider Safety Course - All motorcyclists should take an approved Rider Safety Course.

2. Protective Equipment - Motorcycle riders should always were a properly fitting helmet along with pants and jackets made of thick material such as leather, gloves, eye and ear protection, and over the ankle boots. It is also recommended to have something on the upper body that is highly visible such as a safety vest.

3. Know Your Motorcycle - Read your owner's manual and understand the location and operation of all controls, levers, and pedals.

4. Maintenance - Always check your motorcycle prior to riding and have the unit serviced on a regular basis.

5. Pay Attention When Riding - An unexpected event can occur at any time so always be aware of your surroundings. In addition to looking forward when riding, always take time to look around and behind you. Be aware that other motorists might not see you.

These are just a few tips to help keep motorcyclists safe while on our roadways. For more safety and riding tips please visit the Motorcycle Safety Foundation website at www.msf-usa.org or any motorcycle safety website.
