The Willingboro Fire Department hosted its first annual Youth Fire Academy from August 25th through August 29th. The academy was open to all youth’s ages 14-17 years old. Eleven cadets participated in this year’s academy. The academy was designed to give the cadets a taste of the training that real firefighters go through. Captain Gardner developed the academy and was the lead instructor. He was assisted during the academy by Firefighters Anderson, Costello, Fresco, and Rosario.

On Monday, the first day of the academy, the cadets learned about the history of the fire service. The cadets then spent the entire afternoon learning how to properly wear their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and their Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). For some of the cadets this was their first time experiencing the weight of all the protective equipment a firefighter wears on a daily basis. The cadets practiced over and over until all could properly don their PPE in less than 60 seconds, which is the national standard for donning PPE.
