Several residents of a Garfield Park North home received minor injuries as a result of a house fire on February 20th. At 4 am on the morning of February 20th, Willingboro Firefighters and several neighboring fire departments were dispatched for a house fire at 122 New Castle Lane. Engine 1613 and Ladder 1615 responded and were told by the county's 911 Center that they received numerous calls of fire coming from the rear of the home. Both units arrived in six minutes and found heavy smoke coming from the front of the home.

Captain Gardner took initial command of the incident as Lieutenant Friddell and the crew from Engine 1613 made their way into the home. Firefighter D. O'Donnell entered the home with a 1 3/4" hoseline, followed by Firefighter Costello with hand tools. The crew encountered heavy fire on the first floor of the home. Engine 1632 arrived next and firefighters Holmes and LeHuquet took an addition 1 3/4" hoseline to extinguish fire that had extended to the second floor of the home.

Chief of Department Burnett arrived on scene and took command of the incident, as Captain Gardner became the Operations Officer. Westampton Engine 2723 arrived on scene and was directed to do a search of the home. Additional crews from Mount Laurel and Burlington Township arrived on scene and were used to relieve the crews of Engine 1613 and 1632. Those crews checked both floors of the home for any hidden fire in the walls and ceilings. Chief Burnett was able to place the fire under control at 4:30 am.

All residents were able to make it out of the home prior to the arrival of the fire department. They were all transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The water, electricity, and gas service were shut off to the home. An investigation was conducted by the Burlington County and NJ State Fire Marshal's Offices. Crews from Mount Holly and Delran were at Willingboro Fire Headquarters in case of other incidents in the township. There were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Not only did firefighters have to battle the fire, but the extremely cold temperatures as well. The temperature at the time of the fire was 1 degree, with a wind chill around Negative 10 degrees. Crews from Mount Laurel and Burlington City EMS were called in to assist with warming equipment for the personnel on scene. One firefighter did receive a minor injury due to slipping ice. All crews were clear from the scene at 2:46 pm.
