Firefighters from Willingboro and surrounding towns were able to quickly extinguish a small fire in a Garfield Park home on the evening of February 8th. The department was dispatched to 47 Genesee Lane at 6:52 pm for a fire in the garage. Engine 1613 arrived in six minutes to find smoke coming from the garage and second floor attic. Captain Friddell took command of the incident as his crew prepared to enter the home.
The captain's initial findings was smoke in the house that was starting to bank down to the floor. Firefighters Carcasio and E. O'Donnell entered the home with hand tools and a 1 3/4" hoseline. They were quickly able to locate a small fire in the home and extinguish the fire. They also conducted a search and were able to remove a dog from the home. Westampton Engine 2723 and Mount Laurel Ladder 3615 arrived on scene and assisted with checking the attic above the garage and second floor for any hidden fire.
Due to the quick work of the crews on scene, Captain Friddell was able to place the fire under control at 7:10 pm. Everyone who was in the home was out prior to the arrival of the fire department. The house sustained heavy damage from the smoke. An investigation was conducted by the Burlington County Fire Marshals Office. The fire was determined to be accidental. The residents were able to find alternate housing since the house was uninhabitable due to the smoke and fire damage. All units were clear from the scene at 9:24 pm.
