September 21, 2010

Willingboro firefighters rescued a kitten from a storm drain on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 21st. At 6:10 pm the department was called to the rear of the Acme Supermarket on Levitt Parkway when someone heard the kitten meowing in the drain. The department had responded to this location several times over a two week period in an attempt to rescue the kitten.

Chief of Department Burnett and Engine 1613 responded and confirmed it was the same kitten from earlier attempts. Firefighters removed the protective grate over the drain and then used an air monitoring meter to make sure there were no harmful gases in the drain. Once the drain was deemed safe, Firefighter Robertson entered the drain in an attempt to rescue the kitten. Upon entering the drain the kitten ran from Firefighter Robertson.

Once the kitten ran, Firefighters Rydarowski and Carcasio proceeded to a separate drain opening and used a 1" handline to flow a gentle stream of water to the drain where Firefighter Robertson was positioned. This gentle stream of water was able to push the kitten toward Firefighter Robertson who was able to grab the kitten and take it out of the drain. Firefighter Rydarowski got a towel to wrap the kitten in and a box to hold it during transportation.

The kitten was taken to the Willingboro Veterinary Clinic on Sidney Lane. It will be evaluated and the clinic will attempt to find a suitable home. The incident was complete at 6:50 pm.

Units: Chief 1600 and Engine 1613
