Two Storms In One Day Keep Firefighters Busy

A late January snowstorm kept Willingboro firefighters busy throughout the township. On January 26 and 27 the area was subjected to two storms. One during the morning of the 26th, and the second during the late evening of the 26th until early on the 27th. While both storms produced snow in the area, the second storm also produced a layer of ice on top of previously fallen snow. During this two day period the department responded to 29 incidents.

Crews handled many different types of incidents including vehicle fires, activated fire alarms, partial building collapses, fallen tree branches and wires, and assisting EMS crews. Willingboro firefighters also were tasked with plowing the parking areas at all three fire stations, and some roadways when sent out to assist EMS units that were responding to 911 calls.

The department's full-time and duty-crew personnel responded to these incidents in sometimes blinding snow. The conditions also tested the firefighters and their equipment at times when the heavy snow on the roadways caused department apparatus to become stuck in the snow and ice.

Units: Chief 1600, Engines 1613 and 1632, and Utility 1616
