February 11, 2012

Willingboro Firefighters particpated in training for elevator emergencies in early February. Captain Gardner made arraingements to have the training conducted by Safety and Survival Training, LLC of Bellmawr, NJ. Safety And Survival Training Instructors Daniel Speigel, a Captain in the Wildwood, NJ Fire Department and Mark Becica, a firefighter in Baltimore, MD, conducted several classroom training sessions so that all three platoons and many of the department's Duty Crew Program firefighters could receive the training.

During the classroom training, the instructors talked about different types of elevators and how they operate. They also spoke about emergency operations, safety devices, how to remove people from stuck elevators, and firefighter safety during an elevator emergency. On the afternoon of February 11th, Instructors Speigel and Becica were joined by Instructor Wade Houlihan, a Lieutenant in the Cherry Hill, NJ Fire Department. Willingboro Firefighters were given hands on training using elevators at Lourdes Medical Center, and the Willingboro Municpal Building.

The hands on training gave firefighters an opportunity see the actual workings of an elevator as described during the classroom training. They were also able to conduct several simulated rescue operations.
