January 30, 2013

Willingboro Firefighters responded to a late morning house fire that damaged a home at 40 Newport Lane on January 30th. The department was dispatched at 11:04 am and prior to arrival was notified by EMS 16 that heavy smoke was coming from the front of the home. Engine 1611 arrived in four minutes and connected to a nearby hydrant before proceeding to the home.

Captain Gardner had the crew take a 1 3/4" handline into the home to extinguish the fire. Firefighters Carty and C. Clark entered the smoke filled home and eventually found the fire located in a front bedroom. Firefighter Friddell and a crew from Westampton Engine 2721 then entered the home and assisted with removing sheetrock from the walls and ceiling to make sure there was no hidden fire. The fire was contained to the bedroom, with heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the home.

At 11:20 am Chief of Department Burnett declared the incident under control. The natural gas, electric, and water service to the home was disconnected by utility crews. The Willingboro Towship Construction Official declared the home uninhabitable. Chief Burnett arrainged for the American Red Cross to respond and assist the occupants with temporary housing arraingements.

The fire was investigated by the Burlington County Fire Marshal's Office and was determined to not be suspicious in nature. Several windows that were broken during the fire were boarded-up by a local contractor. No firefighters or civilians were injured during the fire. All units were clear from the scene at 1:03 pm.
