By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
January 4, 2019

At 12:33 pm on Christmas Day, firefighters from Willingboro and several surrounding departments were dispatched to 113 Torrington Lane for a bedroom fire. The fire was originally reported by the home's fire alarm system. While responding to the incident, Engine 1613 was advised that police were on location and reporting an active fire. 1613 arrived on scene at 12:38 pm and found a 2 story dwelling with heavy fire showing through the windows on the first floor of the home.

Lieutenant Costello established command of the incident and confirmed with the home owner that everyone was out of the house. Firefighter Anderson established a water supply with a hydrant across the street from the home. Firefighters Bowe and Riley pulled the 2 inch hose line to start extinguishing the fire. Westampton Engine 2723 arrived shortly behind 1613 and their crew entered the home to conduct a search.

Mount Laurel Ladder 3615 arrived on scene and pulled a 2nd hand line from 1613 to assist with extinguishing the fire. Mount Laurel Battalion Chief 3603 arrived on scene and set up a command post, and Lieutenant Costello became the Operations Officer. Cinnaminson Engine 2021 and Moorestown Engine 3112 both arrived on scene and assumed the role as the Rapid Intervention Crew. The aggressive attack on the fire enabled the crews to limit most of the fire damage to the front bedroom and part of the stairwell to the second floor, with the rest of the home sustaining smoke and heat damage. The fire was placed under control at 12:59 pm.

The water, natural gas, and electric services to the home were all disconnected due to the fire damage. The American Red Cross was on scene to help provide assistance to four adults and one child. A company was called in to secure the property. Willingboro was covered by crews from Delran and Burlington City in the event of another emergency in town. The Burlington County Fire Marshals Office conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire. All crews were clear from the scene at 4:20 pm.

On a bright note, firefighters were able to salvage the family's Christmas presents and return them to the family.
