By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
December 4, 2008

Willingboro firefighters provided mutual aid to neighboring Burlington Township on December 4th. Willingboro has always responded to any of the apartment complexes in Burlington that are on Sunset Road due to our stations being so close to these complexes. As the crew of Engine 1613 was clearing a previous assignment, they were directed to respond to 826 Henri Court the Bienvenue Condominium complex off of Sunset Road at 12:46 pm. Someone had called 911 and reported a fire in the kitchen of an upstairs unit.

As 1613 was entering the complex they were advised by an on scene Burlington Township fire unit that there was an active fire in Unit 826. Captain Gardner had his crew drop their 5" supply hose at the beginning of the court and then proceeded to the unit that was on fire. An engine from Burlington City supplied water to the 5" supply line as 1613's crew stretched an 1 3/4" handline and started entering the unit.

Burlington Township Fire Chief 3000 arrived and assumed the Command position as Captain Gardner's crew started to extinguish the fire. The crew found heat and smoke in the unit and fire burning in the kitchen. Firefighter Blackwell extinguished the fire as Firefighter Centrone backed him up on the line. Captain Gardner and Firefighters C. Clark and Costello searched the apartment for any occupants. They also assisted with making sure there was no hidden fire and that the fire had not extended into the attic of the unit.

The fire was under control within eight minutes of the crew arriving on scene. Damage was limited to the unit that had been on fire. The occupant of the unit did suffer minor burns and was transported to the hospital for treatment. The Red Cross was called to assist with temporary housing for the unit's occupant. Engine 1613 left the scene at 1:36 pm.

Units: Burlington Township Chief 3000, Engine 3012, Utility 3028, Cascade 3038, FI 304, FM 30, and Burlington City EMS 9093 and 9094

Mutual Aid: Willingboro Engine 1613 and Burlington City Engine 9061, Ladder 9035, and Utility 9038
