It is with sadness the Willingboro Fire Department and Riverside Fire Company announce the passing of Walter L. Haines who was a long time member of both departments.

The Obituary:

At just 16 years old, Walt walked into the Riverside Fire Company with a simple desire—to protect the community he loved. That single step became the start of more than half a century of dedicated service. Walt proudly served Riverside Fire Department for over 50 years and Willingboro Fire Department for 39 years. Even after he could no longer actively fight fires, he continued his commitment as a member of the fire police. Both communities benefited immensely from his loyalty, courage, and unwavering devotion. Along the way, he formed friendships that lasted a lifetime.

When he wasn’t responding to calls, Walt could often be found on his motorcycle—a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. He cherished the camaraderie of the Centurions and always looked forward to their toy runs.

Mornings often found Walt buried in the newspaper—he read every page and kept stacks of them. And if the TV was on, he was tuned in to 6ABC, Walker Texas Ranger, CHiPs, NCIS, or any of the fire and emergency shows. A proud Phillies and Eagles fan, Walt never missed a game when they were on.

He loved classic American comfort food—hot dogs, roast beef, and cheeseburgers—and he’d always say, “Just don’t burn the edges!”

Walt spent his entire life in Riverside and Willingboro, the towns he served and treasured.

A simple date to a fireman’s dinner with Mary grew into a beautiful 38-year marriage. Walt was a beloved father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, and devoted friend to many. His presence will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

Come celebrate 72 wonderful years on Saturday, from 9:00 a.m. to noon, at Sweeney Funeral Home, 337 Bridgeboro Street, Riverside. A service will follow at noon. Interment will take place at St. Peter Cemetery, Riverside.

Walt (Dad to me) took me into his home when I was a teenager after my father threw me out. He was so warm and welcoming and I loved our motorcycle rides. He always made us laugh and always gave a gentle smile. I’m his daughter Gail’s best friend, and he treated me like nothing less than one of his own. Heaven gained an angel for sure!!! May his children find comfort in the memories and knowledge that he lived his life to protect others.
