Firefighters Quickly Extinguish Garage Fire
By Firefighter Mark Robertson Sr.
April 30, 2009
The department's C Platoon was able to make quick work of a garage fire at 85 Hampshire Lane. On Thursday, April 30th at 1:02 pm, the department along with several neighboring departments were called to the house for a fire in the garage. The homeowner reported a fire on the outside of the house that he believed had made its way into the garage.
Chief of Department Burnett arrived on location in just over a minute and found a two-story house with smoke showing from the attic area of the garage. Engine 1613 arrived within two minutes of dispatch and connected to a hydrant and proceeded to the house. Captain Gardner assumed the Operations position as his crew prepared to enter the garage. Ladder 1615 arrived and took a position in front of the house in case the fire went through the roof.
Firefighter's Anderson, Friddell, and Centrone entered the garage of the house and found a heavy smoke condition. They were able to get into the attic where they found fire burning. Firefighter Anderson used a 1 3/4" handline to extinguish the fire in the attic and on the outside of the home. Firefighters Friddell and Centrone used tools to help access the attic area from the garage floor. Firefighter D. O'Donnell and Westampton firefighters used tools to pull away the siding on the side of the home to check for hidden fire.
Chief Burnett placed the fire under control at 1:16 pm. No residents or firefighters were injured as a result of the fire. The fire is being investigated by the N. J. State Fire Marshal's Office and appears to be accidental. All units were clear from the scene at 3:36 pm.
